Hakuba Norikura Onsen Ski Resort

Hakuba Norikura Onsen Snow Resort, commonly known as Hakunori, is located in Otari at the northern end of the Hakuba Valley. Less developed and generally quieter than some of Hakuba's larger resorts, Hakunori combines deep-snow terrain, traditional onsen culture and a varied collection of slopes ranging from very gentle beginner runs to some surprisingly steep expert terrain. The resort promotes itself as a "powder heaven", and its location toward the northern end of the valley makes powder skiing one of its major attractions.

The ski area is served by nine Hakunori lifts and offers terrain spread across several distinct parts of the mountain. Beginners have genuinely gentle places to learn, including the 750-metre Family Course with an average gradient of just 5%, and the 800-metre Wakaguri Forest Course. Intermediate skiers have considerably more mountain to explore, including the 1,200-metre Kamoshika Course, Wakaguri Central Slope and Satomi Central Slope.

Advanced skiers and snowboarders should not underestimate Hakunori. The resort's Expert Course reaches 35 degrees, while the 500-metre Sky View Slope reaches 38 degrees. Other more demanding options include the Snake Course, Highway Course, Rabbit Course and Satomi Ridge Course. There is also a mogul course and a cross course, giving the mountain more variety than its relatively low-key reputation might suggest.

One of Hakunori's advantages is its relationship with neighboring Hakuba Cortina. The two ski areas are marketed together and combined lift and season passes are available, effectively giving visitors access to a broader area when operating and snow conditions permit. For the 2026–27 season, Hakunori has already announced a combined Hakuba Norikura and Hakuba Cortina season pass.

Families are also well catered for. In addition to the easier slopes, Hakunori has a dedicated Kids Park, while its mix of beginner, intermediate and expert terrain makes it practical for groups containing skiers of different abilities. Equipment rental is available from the rental corner inside the Hakuba Alps Hotel, immediately beside the slopes, with accessories such as goggles and gloves also available for purchase.

The onsen part of the resort's name is very real. Hakuba Norikura has natural Wakaguri hot-spring water, with bathing available at both the Hakuba Alps Hotel and Norikuraso. The spring is a sodium hydrogen carbonate spring with naturally brown-colored water and a source temperature of 57.5°C. The Hakuba Alps Hotel has indoor and outdoor baths as well as a sauna, making an onsen after a cold day on the mountain one of the more appealing parts of a Hakunori visit.

Hakunori also has several places to eat around the ski area. Snow Drop is particularly unusual for a ski-resort restaurant, with links to seafood businesses in nearby Itoigawa on the Sea of Japan. Its menu has featured regional dishes using ingredients such as yellowtail, snow crab and sweet shrimp alongside familiar ski-area choices such as curry, ramen and katsudon. Other smaller dining options are spread around the Satomi area and nearby accommodation.

Access is possible by both public transport and car. From Tokyo, one option is the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano followed by an express bus toward Hakuba Norikura. Drivers can approach from Azumino, Koshoku or Itoigawa, with the Itoigawa route approximately 40 km from the interchange. The resort lists free 24-hour parking for around 1,000 vehicles in the Wakaguri area, and the Hakuba Valley shuttle network also connects Hakunori with other parts of the valley.

For skiers who prefer a quieter atmosphere, powder terrain and a more traditional mountain setting, Hakuba Norikura offers a different experience from the busier resorts farther south in Hakuba Valley. The combination of gentle family skiing, legitimately steep advanced terrain, access to the wider Hakuba Valley, natural hot springs and the neighboring Cortina ski area makes Hakunori particularly appealing to visitors who want more than just another large commercial ski resort.
